About Paraty

Paraty (sometimes Parati) sits between Rio and São Paulo on the Costa Verde — Brazil's Green Coast. Founded in 1597 as a gold port, the historic center is intentionally flooded at high tide and remains free of cars: cobblestone streets, white-and-blue colonial houses, baroque churches and the bay of 65 islands visible at the end of every alley. UNESCO declared it a mixed natural-cultural World Heritage Site in 2019. The town hosts FLIP, Latin America's largest literary festival, in July.
