About Paraty
Paraty (sometimes Parati) sits between Rio and São Paulo on the Costa Verde — Brazil's Green Coast. Founded in 1597 as a gold port, the historic center is intentionally flooded at high tide and remains free of cars: cobblestone streets, white-and-blue colonial houses, baroque churches and the bay of 65 islands visible at the end of every alley. UNESCO declared it a mixed natural-cultural World Heritage Site in 2019. The town hosts FLIP, Latin America's largest literary festival, in July.

Safety
Paraty is one of the safest tourist towns in Brazil. Crime is extremely low in the historic center.
Language
Portuguese. English in tourist-facing pousadas and good restaurants.
Money
Cards in establishments. Cash useful for street vendors and boat workers.
Internet
Fiber improving (50–150 Mbps in most pousadas). 4G works in town, patchy on islands.
Downsides (honest)
Heavy rain Dec–Mar (it's the wettest place on Costa Verde)
Cobblestones brutal for wheeled luggage
Tides flood Centro intentionally (charm or wet feet, depending on mood)
Limited beach in Centro itself (need boat/car to reach the great ones)
Perfect for
Culture and history lovers, slow travelers, photographers, couples and small groups. Less ideal for travelers wanting all-day beach (better at Búzios or Trancoso).
