About Fernando de Noronha
Fernando de Noronha is a volcanic archipelago 350 km off the Pernambuco coast. The main island is 17 km² and limited to 460 tourists per day by environmental quota. UNESCO World Heritage since 2001, it has 16 beaches with visibility over 30 meters underwater, the highest concentration of dolphins on Earth (Baía dos Golfinhos), and the most photogenic beach in Brazil (Praia do Sancho — voted #1 in the world multiple times by TripAdvisor). Note
Noronha is the most expensive destination in Brazil. Budget travelers struggle. Park fee + preservation tax add ~$45/day per person. Most operators want USD or BRL cash.
Safety
Noronha is one of the safest places in Brazil. Risks: sunburn (intense equatorial sun), strong currents on some beaches, the cliffside trails.
Language
Portuguese. English in dive shops and upscale pousadas. Spanish less common.
Money
Cards in most establishments. One ATM in village (often empty). Bring backup cash. Pay park fee in advance online.
Internet
Improving. Most pousadas have 30–80 Mbps. Mobile signal works in village and main beaches.
Downsides (honest)
Expensive everywhere — park fees compound costs
Booking 3–6 months ahead in high season
Limited restaurants/shops (it's a protected island)
Sancho ladder closed in rough seas
No nightlife beyond reggae bars
Perfect for
Divers, nature lovers, honeymooners, photographers. Not for budget travelers, party crowd, or convenience seekers.
