About Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara — locals say Jeri — is a former fishing village in Ceará's far west coast, 300 km from Fortaleza. It sits inside a national park (Parque Nacional de Jericoacoara), which means no asphalt, no street lights, donkeys still pull carts, and getting there requires the last 22 km in 4×4. The wind blows hard from July through January, making it one of the top 3 kitesurfing destinations on Earth. Sunset is collective: the entire village walks up Duna do Pôr do Sol at 5pm.

Safety

Jericoacoara is extremely safe. The village is too small for street crime to exist. Watch out for sun (intense) and dehydration. Drink bottled water.

Language

Portuguese. Many kite instructors speak English/German/French. Spanish less common than Búzios.

Money

Some pousadas accept cards but cash is essential for street food, buggy drivers, and forró bars. One ATM in town — bring backup cash from Fortaleza.

Internet

Improving fast. Most pousadas have 50–150 Mbps fiber. Mobile signal patchy on remote beaches.

Downsides (honest)

Perfect for

Kitesurfers (1st-choice in Brazil), adventure travelers, anyone wanting an authentic remote beach village. Not for hotel-comfort travelers or quick weekend trips.
